One of the highlights of our grand tour of Northern Europe was the visit to Amsterdam for New Year. During our time here we booked a Canal Tour, a must do in Amsterdam.
Those Dam Boat Guys
We wanted a canal tour that felt more personal, not the typical crowded coach-style experience. So, instead of hopping onto one of the large, enclosed boats with 50 people, we opted for Those Dam Boat Guys. Their smaller, more intimate boats offered a laid-back vibe and a bit more freedom. Though the boat was covered to shield us from the rain, it was just four couples, the captain, and a cooler full of beer (which you pre-order when you book your tickets). Perfect for a relaxed, fun ride through the canals.

Although their office is located on Prinsenstraat, the boat dock is right on the Keizersgracht canal. After using the facilities at the office, we made our way to our cozy little boat. Luckily, our captain was a pro—an American comedian who had moved to Amsterdam over 25 years ago. He treated us to a historical tour, sharing insights into the area’s history, specific buildings, and Dutch culture. With humour and candour, he talked about his Dutch friends and their quirky attitudes toward things like sex and drugs (“do what you want, just don’t be a dick about it”), his own weight loss (“you used to be so fat!”), and cultural practices like casually sitting on the edge of a canal to enjoy lunch. It was a mix of history, humour, and cultural quirks, all delivered with a smile.

Our tour took us past the Homomonument and Anne Frank’s House, though we couldn’t get tickets (they sell out six weeks in advance!). We then cruised under a series of low bridges, heading toward the Amstel River. As we approached the Magere Brug—also known as the Skinny Bridge—our captain shared a local legend. Apparently kissing your lover on or under the bridge ensures your love will last forever. So, embracing the romance, we leaned in for a long, passionate kiss under the bridge.
Thanks to the small boats used by Those Dam Boat Guys, we had the freedom to choose our route. We made our way past the University, the Zoo, and the Botanical Gardens, soaking in the views. Then we looped back past the Flower Markets on our way to the dock. All the while, our comedian of a captain kept us entertained with his hilarious stories and quirky advice, making it a fun and memorable ride.
