Windsor Castle

After departing London, we dropped in to Christian’s birthplace – Windsor. The town is dominated by the Castle, and for good reason – it is magnificent. One of the World’s largest and most continuously occupied castles, it is a favourite!

Outside

The approach to the castle is obvious, as it dominates the town, as it is at the top of the hill. A little walk uphill to the ticket office and security screening hall, and then you get entry to the castle grounds. We bought tickets at the door, but we recommend you buy tickets online, as you get a discount and can skip some queues. We paid our £33 each entry, and then entered the security hall. The security is similar to an airport, with x-ray scanners for your bags.

Very soon, you follow the walls around some gardens and grounds, take in the amazing views, and follow the crowds to enter the castle itself.

Queen Mary’s Dollhouse

Originally, the Doll’s House was an extra paid attraction, but now it is part of the main tour route around the castle. The finely created house is a very detailed and a joy to look at, where the more that you look, the more detail you can find.

You are not permitted to take any photos in Windsor Castle, and so the staff with yell out to you to stop, if they see you take a snap.

Photos of the Castle

The castle State Rooms in Windsor are opulent and fit to be a palace! At some times, the rooms were just overwhelming with their beauty and extravagance, and then there was yet another room that was even more amazing.

We could not get pictures of everything, but there were formal dining rooms that could seat 60, and displays of elgant and rare china that was used to serve them.

Displays of weaponry (not sure if it was captured or just used items) adorned some rooms. Other rooms had rare and enormous paintings from famous artists, of kings, queens and important people. There were statues and busts, and gifts from other peoples of the Commonwealth and beyond the Empire.

Gilded furniture, opulent tapestries and curtains, exquisite clocks and even the beds of kings were on display.

As we walked around, Bianca marvelled at room after room of even more amazing sights. Christian has seen the castle a few times, but there is always something great to see.

Outside

After the State Apartments, we exited (through a gift shop) to the grounds of the castle. Some of the gardens were easily visible, showing great design and execution. What could be better than a garden in a castle’s grounds?

Walking down the hill from the Round Tower, we passed another gift shop to enter St George’s chapel. This is where Harry and Megan were married, and where Elizabeth II and Philip are buiried.

As we exited through another gift shop, we were able to catch the tail-end of another changing of the guard. The castle experience is really something special, and we are both glad that we got to experience it.
