My eldest son Tom turns 21 this year so we let him choose somewhere special for dinner. He decided on A Hereford Beefstouw for a Tomahawk. So, off we went to the Hutt Street restaurant.

A Hereford Beefstouw is located in an older building, that has been modernised to be an elegant space. As you enter, you are greeted by a wall of wine, with lots of bottles on display. The attentive staff then took us to our table and brought us water.

The menu has a small selection, with an emphasis on steaks. Tom wanted the 2Kg tomahawk for $200, and the waitress suggested that it would feed three, with a few side dishes. Perfect. We ordered the steak rare.

After less than half an hour, our steak arrived and was carved at our table, which was a fantastic experience. The waitress had a special trolley with a pivoting chopping board that could take the massive hunk of meat.

We also ordered the asparagus and broccolini, as well as the spicy potatoes. Tom does not like spicy food, and so we asked the kitchen to make the potatoes slightly less spicy, which they were happy to accommodate. The sides were delicious and the potatoes were still crispy and full of flavour.

The meal came with little pots of bearnaise sauce, truffle butter and jus. It seemed like not enough, but it ended up being just enough.

The bone was also left with us and we tried to get the last scraps of meat off it without picking it up and chewing it, which was very tempting.

The meal was delicious, and it was actually quite cost-effective to share the large cut of meat three ways.
