One of our favourite events, held by the City of Brighton along the beach in January each year, is the free sculpture exhibition. The artists submit work in various categories and judges award prizes. Many of the pieces are for public sale and some of the artists will take commissions. Artworks adorn a large section of The Esplanade, with a park full of pieces across the road. Last year it was a wash-out, but this year the weather was glorious and we were able to wander the Esplanade in the beautiful sunshine.
Most of the sculptures along the beachfront are metal or stone, but many of them utilize recovered or recycled materials. This gives the impression that many of them should remain in place, or have been there for many years. In fact, the local council often purchases artworks for permanent installation on the beachfront.
You can spend hours wandering amongst the artwork, appreciating the talent of the artists in a beautiful setting. There are many cafes and hotels nearby so why not make a day of it?
